How can I eat Jackfruit?

Before we get into many yummy dishes that can be made starring jackfruit, it might be useful to know how to prepare the jackfruit first.

Preparing jackfruit
First, you must cut into the jackfruit.
It is best to use a sharp knife. Carefully slice it through the middle. So that you get two equal halves. Lay the jackfruit with the flesh facing up. The large white central stem can be cut into small pieces and removed.

  • Turn the fruit inside out

Hold the outside layer of the fruit with a firm grip. Push the seeds to the top and grab them out of the flesh. It looks a bit like pulled pork. You will need to repeat this process until you have extracted all of the seeds. Don’t forget that you have two sides!

*Tip* The jackfruit consists of sticky sap. This can stick to your hands, clothes, and anywhere you don’t want it to. This is why people use oil on their hands and on their knife when cutting into the jackfruit. Vegetable oil will due. This will make the process go a lot smoother.

  • Choose your method
The edible part is the fleshy pods that protect the seed. If you want to consume the seed as well you will need to choose your method of cooking.

Once all the flesh is removed you have two options

  1. Boil
One option is to boil the jackfruit seed for approximately 15 minutes. It will get a boiled potato kind of structure, with not that much taste. Most of the taste is inside the fleshy pods around the seed as mentioned above.
  2. Roast
The second option is to roast the seed. This will give it a firm texture instead a soft-boiled texture. The easiest way to do this is to place the seeds inside the oven at around 400 degrees Fahrenheit or 204 degrees Celsius for about 20 minutes.

-Add them to your dish

Once the jackfruit flesh is removed, the seeds are either boiled or roasted, it is time to add them to your dish.
